For 1.6 billion people in the world, Ramadan begins on Monday 6 May 2019.

What has decided to organize Old Fashion for the Ramadan period?

Milan is increasingly a cosmopolitan city with multiple cultures, ethnic groups and religions that coexist peacefully with each other. To meet the needs of the Islamic clientele who decides to follow the rule, Old Fashion has decided to create a special menu of “non-Alcoholic Jugs” to be served at the tables (and of course ralso absolutely non-alcoholic cocktails) to be served at the bars. The traditional Shisha with a jug of non-alcoholic Cocktail will cost around € 100 for every two people, while the non-alcoholic cocktail will be present in all the bars of the venue for the price of € 10.

It is a service for our muslim clientele (but obviously also dedicated to all those who opt for a more sober drink) who might find it uncomfortable to spend an evening at the bar, merely drinking the typical sodas such as Coca Cola, Acqua tonic etc etc.

Ends June 5, feast day called Aid Al Fitr or Aid Assaghir.

Milano has been a multicultural and multi-ethnic city for years and we are increasingly used to dealing with citizens who have different traditions and celebrations among themselves.
To discover and understand one of the religious traditions in the city with which – maybe – we find ourselves having to interact
, we have collected a brief guide on what Ramadan is.

What Ramadan is?

Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic calendar and lasts 29 or 30 days. The number of days varies according to the observation of the first new crescent moon, as the months of the Islamic calendar are based precisely on a scan of the lunar time.

What is done during Ramadan

Throughout the month, Muslims must refrain from eating, drinking, smoking and having sex between dawn and dusk and will celebrate in prayer the revelation of the Koran by God to Muhammad. In the month of Ramadan (in which according to tradition the Prophet consumed only a glass of goat’s milk and six dates a day) the Koran provides that children, the sick, pregnant women and those who must undertake long journeys are exempted from fasting . Before retiring for the night the faithful are called to special community prayers in which they recite long passages from the Koran.

During Ramadan every practicing Muslim has to go to pray in the mosque. In this period, besides the usual five daily prayers, a special prayer should be recited, the Taraweeh, the night prayer.

What does Islamic calendar mean ?

The Islamic calendar is a lunar calendar in which year zero corresponds to 622 AD, the year in which the prophet Muhammad and the first Muslims moved from the city of Mecca to that of Medina. For Muslims this year is 1439.

Why is Ramadan never in the same period of the year?

The lunar calendar lasts about ten days less than the solar Gregorian calendar used in most of the world. Every year, therefore, all Islamic months arrive ten days earlier than the previous year.

What is fasting?

Fasting is often widely understood as a withdrawal from food, but it is not only this. Ramadan fasts require refraining from drinking, eating, having sex, lying, smoking, bad language.
You need to be as devoted as possible, do charity work, and spend a lot of time reading the Koran and meditating.

How long does fasting take?

Fasting begins before dawn and ends after sunset. You don’t have to eat or drink anything during daylight hours.
In Italy, you have to stop eating around 3:30 am and resume eating after 8:30 pm, but times vary from city to city.

What happens if fasting is not respected?

If a person is unable to fast, he can decide whether to recover fasts during the year, before the arrival of the next Ramadan, or to give a meal to a poor person for every day of fasting he skips.

Can anything be eaten at the end of the fast?

After having recited a very short prayer, it is customary to eat dates or drink water to open the fast. Then a hearty meal follows.

What happens after the last day of fasting?

It is celebrated. The party that falls at the end of Ramadan is called Eid ul Fitr. The festivities begin with the rising of the new moon. During Eid, Muslims wear their best clothes, exchange gifts, spend time with their family, eat abundantly and wish Eid Mubarak, or “good Eid“, to each other.

So, if you want to make a good impression, remember June 5th to wish it to your Muslim friends.
